Partner of Kazanlak Municipality in implementing the project ,,Conservation, restoration and socialization of Thracian mounds ,,Helvetia” and , Griffins”, funded by the BG08 program is Historical Museum ,,Iskra” of Kazanlak.
Historical museum “Iskra” – Kazanlak was established on June 29, 1901 by Peter Topuzov and Ivan Enchev – Vidyu as a Museum of Antiquities and Arts. “Whatever antiquities and art have either found in the city and county to collect and retain” is the tenet of the museum.
Today the funds and expositions of museum objects are stored over 50,000 exhibits, divided into nine departments – Prehistory, Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Modern History, Contemporary History, Ethnography, Kazanlak Rose and history of musical culture.
Historical Museum administers several available to visit sites – permanent exhibition in the main building, Rose Museum, Ethnographic Complex, „Petko Staynov“ House, Kazanlak Tomb /one of Bulgaria‘s monuments under UNESCO/ and three more socialized tombs situated in the so called Valley of the Thracian Kings.
Permanent exhibition of the museum is located on several levels, where are presented the most attractive, high scientific and artistic value of the nine exhibits department. Accents are a collection of prehistoric bone sickles; the finds of Thracian city Sevtopolis and tombs; medieval armor; exhibits related to the struggles for independent Bulgarian church and education in Bulgarian Revival; Ivan Enchev- Vidyu’s collection of crosses and jewelry and costumes from Kazanlak region; exhibits related to the Russo-Turkish War and the wars for national unification; materials presenting different productions of Kazanlak from the early twentieth century.
Besides the permanent exhibition in the multimedia room of the museum are organized temporary exhibitions – with not shown exhibits of funds or from visiting exhibitions from the other museums in the country.
In the first half of the twentieth century a local organization Kazanlak fellowship “Rose Valley” published three volumes of “Kazanlak in the past and today” collection. After 1989, the museum “Iskra” continues the tradition and today we have issued five volumes of the series.
For the last twenty years local lore society “Iv. Enchev – Vidyu “created by the museum and the library organizes so called Regional studies readings. All the presented materials and research papers are related to various aspects of social, cultural and political life of Kazanlak region and they are published in three scrolls.
For ten years, the museum is hosting a scientific forum “Problems and studies of Thracian culture,” which is part of the Days of Thracian culture held in the city. Kazanlak. As a result we have issued seven volumes of the same title.
