With a preserved cultural heritage in the Valley of the Thracian Kings, the Municipality of Kazanlak completes the project “Conservation, restoration and socialization of Thracian mounds Helvetia” and “Griffins”.
The tombs of “Helvetia” and “Griffins” were discovered by Georgi Kitov in 1996. Due to unfavorable climatic conditions and lack of restoration and conservation activity over the last twenty years, the condition of the unique tombs has deteriorated.
Thanks to the activities of the project Helvetia and Griffins are preserved and socialized as a part of the rich cultural heritage of the Valley of the Thracian Kings. The project contributes to the restoration and preservation for the future generations of two unique monuments of Thracian culture of national importance and allows them to be accessible for visits by citizens and tourists.
The construction and assembly activities are in the final stage. A new reception building was set up to serve as an information center for the visitors of the Thracian mounds “Griffins”, “Helvetia” and “Shushmanets”. The area around the reception building and the tombs is cultivated. There will be a recreation area and a small car park. Temporary protective structures are replaced with permanent protective coatings and waterproofing over the tombs. Data-loggers have been installed, electrical installation and lighting, air-conditioning of the space in and around the tomb of Helvetia. Glazed metal platforms, conservation-restoration works and others are built.
The realization of the project preserved the authentic appearance of the objects and at the same time ensured their socialization in a contemporary and appealing way for the tourists. Until April, tombs will be open for visits to educational, research and purely amateur purposes by various social groups.
